BIOGRAPHY
Luca, both the band and the man, have been through many changes over these past few years. The group evolved from a jazzy trio into the guitar driven, pop and psychedelia infused, rock four-piece not to be reckoned with. Front man recently Nick Luca went through some big changes himself. The seemingly unstoppable front man, accompanying musician (Neko Case, M Ward, Calexico, Devotchka, Howe Gelb and Robyn Hitchcock), and producer recently found his proverbial Achilles’ heel.
His 2007 stint as John Doe’s (X) touring guitarist ended in an emergency hospital visit where Nick Luca was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. With an overwhelming amount of support from fans, friends, and press alike, Nick was quick to recover and appreciate his new lease on life.
Luca’s latest release, Fractions, is an excellent listen through and through. Gorgeous songwriting all around with songs that range from Beatles-esque pop to straightforward rock. Produced by the legendary Sean Slade (Radio Head, Hole, The Pixies), the album includes nine songs penned by Nick Luca himself as well as two cover songs, a shimmery version of Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” and Jonathan Richman’s fun track, “I Was Dancing in a Lesbian Bar.”
With the guitar genius of Joey Unger and the sticks skills of Ryan Janac, both of Tucson’s fan-favored Sunday Afternoon, and longtime friend and band mate Chris Giambelluca, Luca is officially in rock & roll territory and they’re feeling right at home. Look out for Luca on the road and at SXSW 2008!
