BIOGRAPHY
One of Arizona’s most accomplished new bands, Mostly Bears features fireworks, pounding drums, unusual backing vocals and sounds, perfectly rumbling bass lines, chaotic and frenzied guitars. Over it all soars the unique voice of Brian Lopez (Vocals, Guitars). The eclectic trio also consists of Nick Wantland (Drums, Percussion) and Geoffrey Hidalgo (Bass, Vocals). Less than a year after formation, Mostly Bears released a four song E.P. titled Only Child that, despite being recorded at a friend’s house and receiving very limited promotion, cracked the CMJ top 200 and held the #118 spot. Only Child displayed the vast potential of the band.
Soon after the release, Mostly Bears received the Best New Band Award at the ‘Tammies’ (Tucson, AZ’s version of the Grammy Awards) and played a number of showcases at the world famous music festival, South by Southwest. Their controlled but chaotic guitar riffs, rock solid drumming, melodic bass lines, and “haunting,” “unusual,” “velvet toned,” and “falsetto perfected” vocals draw comparisons to The Mars Volta, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, and The Arcade Fire, to name a few.
With the release of their debut full-length album The Ed Mitchell Clinic, April 2008 marked the next leap in Mostly Bears’ career. The album was #5 most added at CMJ, spending over 9 weeks charting in the Top 200, and peaking at #30. The critically acclaimed album has garnered rave reviews from press all over the country, calling The Ed Mitchell Clinic “vital, powerful and undeniable” (Stranded in Stereo), “Full of verve and with chops to burn” (Allmusic.com), “Adventurous and never boring” (PopMatters), and “One of the year's best albums … among the top indie bows of the past decade” (Creative Loafing). Mostly Bears has a full-scale national tour coming in the summer of 2008.
